MANAMA: Organisers of demonstrations which turn violent will be held accountable from now on. The Interior Ministry was yesterday instructed to draft a law amending articles 2 and 13 of legal provisions governing meetings, rallies and demonstrations.
A Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa at Gudaibiya Palace ordered co-ordination with the Legal Affairs Directorate.
Under the draft law, organisers will be held responsible for damages should demonstrations derail from their initial objectives.
They will also be held accountable for any violation of the law or encroachment on public order.
The move follows acts of sabotage which marred a pro-Palestinian demonstration staged last Friday in support of besieged Gaza.
“The rally derailed from its initial goals, leading to crimes punishable by law,” Cabinet Affairs Minister Shaikh Ahmed bin Ateyatala Al Khalifa said in a statement after the Cabinet meeting.
“A group of demonstrators engaged in acts of rioting and sabotage and attacked policemen, injuring them,” he said.
* MPs, councillors and businessmen yesterday backed the Interior Ministry’s proposal to impose penalties on organisers and participants of demonstrations that turn violent.
