New twist in murder trial

A NEW suspect has been added to a list of seven men accused of murdering a Pakistani man when his car was firebombed, it emerged yesterday. The eight Bahrainis are accused of murdering Shaikh Mohammed Riaz when his pick up was attacked in Ma’ameer. They will appear before the High Criminal Court for the first time today since blood money negotiations were suspended.

Attorney Mohammed Al Tajer told the GDN yesterday that the defence team was shocked to find out about the additional suspect.

“I don’t know the grounds on which he was arrested because the investigations were over a long time ago and there was no suspect who was a fugitive,” he said.

The 58-year-old victim died in the hospital on March 21, three weeks after the attack.

The GDN reported that Al Wefaq backed the blood money talks, claiming that the men were among 178 detainees and prisoners pardoned by His Majesty King Hamad in April.

Negotiations had been underway with relatives of

Mr Riaz and Pakistani policeman Majid Al Baksh, who was killed in an attack on his patrol car in Karzakan in April last year. But those talks stopped when Al Wefaq was told that the trials will go ahead of 19 people accused of killing Mr Al Baksh and those accused of murdering Mr Riaz. noor@gdn.com.bh
