THE family of a Bahraini man, who was killed in a bomb blast, yesterday dismissed indications that he may have been involved in making it at the time.

They claimed he died due to an attack while he was celebrating a religious occasion.

The incident took place at around 8pm on Thursday, when Moosa Jaffar Khalil Ebrahim was on his way to take home-cooked food from his mother’s house to his friend Ali Sa’ad, claimed relatives.

Mr Ebrahim was going to accompany Mr Sa’ad, who came to pick him up so he could join them at his home in Daih, they said.

The car blast was caused by a locally-made bomb and it was next to Mr Ebrahim before it exploded, according to the CID.

Metal and plastic pieces were found scattered inside and around the car along with three batteries, a metal screwdriver, a plastic ha-ndle and wires, it said.

Mr Eb-rahim’s body was lying on the right side of the car near the driver’s seat with injuries to the stomach, pelvis and thighs.

His blood-stained clothes showed traces of burns and glass shards.

The Public Prosecution team found that the top right part of the car bore the burnt of the blast.

Mr Sa’ad could not be questioned due to his critical condition, said officials.

Mr Ebrahim was earlier distributing sweets in the neighbourhood to celebrate the birth anniversary of Syeda Zainab, daughter of Imam Ali, and wanted to take food to his friends, said the 30-year-old’s uncle Mohammed Khalil.

He said all his family members, especially his wife, were in deep shock.

“It is not true that the bomb was lying next to his body and I think all the newspapers got wrong information and published it without confirming it with us,” said his uncle Mohammed Khalil.

“He was so happy and celebrating the birth anniversary of Syeda Zainab.

“Ali, who is a neighbour and friend, was with him at that time and they were going to Ali’s house.

“He just packed the food and said he would take dinner with Ali in his house.

“I don’t know what happened then. He just went out and sat in Ali’s car.

“We heard a loud explosion and rushed to see what had happened and found him dead.”

Mr Ebrahim had worked as a labourer and driver for Gulf Power Company, a battery manufacturing company near Alba.

He was the third of eight brothers and sisters.

He leaves wife Zainab and two daughters – Batool, four, and 18-month-old Rabab.

He was buried on Friday in Jidhafs cemetery at around 11am in the presence of family, friends and neighbours.

Mr Sa’ad’s right wrist was severed in the explosion and he sustained third degree burns to his face and body.

Doctors had to remove the shrapnel and a battery from his face, while he reportedly lost both his eyes following the blast.

The 24-year-old remains in critical condition, said hospital sources. aneeqa@gdn.com.bh
