King of Bahrain must stand up for Human Rights – Avebury

The King of Bahrain has been reported to the United Nations Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders following threats he made to human rights defenders in Bahrain.
Lord Eric Avebury, Liberal Democrat Foreign Affairs spokeperson and vice-chair of the UK Parliamentary Human Rights Group, has written to the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders, Ms Hina Jilani, about the threats made against pardoned former exiles in the country.

The King of Bahrain has been reported to the United Nations Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders following threats he made to human rights defenders in Bahrain.
Lord Eric Avebury, Liberal Democrat Foreign Affairs spokeperson and vice-chair of the UK Parliamentary Human Rights Group, has written to the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders, Ms Hina Jilani, about the threats made against pardoned former exiles in the country.
Commenting, Lord Avebury said,
“Bahrain tries hard to prevent human rights activists from getting heard abroad.”
“The King’s remarks should be seen in the context of recent cases of detention and torture of activists reported by the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights and as calculated to intimidate and silence human rights defenders in Bahrain.”
“I have written to ask the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders to consider the King’s threat and to take the matter up with the Bahraini authorities.”
