A BAHRAINI teenager arrested during clashes between riot police and protesters on Sunday has been released from police custody.
The 13-year-old boy was arrested for allegedly setting an electric generator alight in Burhama on the night of the protests.
Bahrain Human Rights Society secretary-
general Dr Abdulla Al Durazi said the youth’s case had been handed over to the juvenile prosecution and he would now be assigned a lawyer.
At least five other people, including a 16-year-old, were also held for questioning for their involvement in the protests, according to Dr Al Durazi.
However, neither police nor Public Prosecution officials would confirm how many were in custody yesterday.
Hundreds of people across Bahrain joined the protests, affecting areas including Dair, Diraz, Karbabad, Hamala, Samaheej and Malkiya.
According to sources, protesters were burning tyres and clashing with police who used tear gas to bring the crowd under control.
Clashes broke out across Bahrain on Sunday afternoon and continued until midnight after 11 Bahraini men were sentenced to one to seven years in prison for rioting and related offences.
One was jailed for seven years and fined BD9,985 for causing unrest, violence against police and hurling a Molotov cocktail inside a police car.
Four were jailed for five years for causing unrest, violence against police, torching a police car and stealing guns and ammunition.
Six were jailed for a year each for obtaining and possessing a gun and causing unrest, while others were acquitted of all charges.
A lawyer representing several of those jailed has said they would most likely appeal the verdict, but he said it was not clear whether four who were acquitted would try to claim compensation.
