The leader of Al Wefaq and Member of Parliament Shaikh Ali Salman (above) was stopped from entering Kuwait yesterday. Shaikh Ali Salman was part of an Al Wefaq delegation on a parliamentary visit to Kuwait.
According to a statement issued by the society yesterday, Shaikh Ali Salman, on arrival, was informed by immigration officials that he was barred from entering the country “since his name was on the blacklist forwarded by the Bahraini authorities on March 18.”
The delegation included Shaikh Jassim Ahmed Hassan Al Moamin, Mohammed Yousif Yaqoob Al Moz’il, Abdulhussain Ahmed Al Mitghawi and the Vice General Secretary of the party Shaikh Hussein Daihi.
Blacklist denied
In the statement, Shaikh Daihi said timely intervention by some Kuwaiti MPs, however, ensured entry for Shaikh Ali Salman into the country.
This is the third such incident where Bahraini leaders have been barred from visiting neighbouring countries. Earlier, Shaikh Hussein Daihi and Shaikh Jassim Al Khayat were barred from entering Saudi Arabia and Kuwait respectively for the same reasons.
Reacting to the development, the Assistant Undersecretary for Legal Affairs at the Ministry of Interior, however, denied the existence of a blacklist.
In a statement, he said that Bahrain had never issued a list of names of individuals to other countries. The statement also said that the ministry did not have the authority to stop other countries from barring individuals.
The Assistant Undersecretary said Mohammed Al Moz’il had informed them about Shaikh Ali Salman’s case and that they had already contacted the Kuwaiti authorities.
Meanwhile, the head of the Legislative and Legal Affairs Committee in Parliament, Khalil Marzooq said this was a violation of the constitutional right of an MP.
He demanded that the Speaker of the House, Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Dhahrani fight for the right of the MPs. Deputy Shaikh Hassan Sultan said that the Ministry of Interior was following the policies which it had during the 90’s while Mohammed Al Moz’il questioned the effectiveness of diplomatic passports held by the deputies.
