AN investigation into an alleged beating of a seven-year-old Iraqi child by his teacher will be conducted by the Education Ministry, a spokesman said yesterday.
The incident allegedly took place at the Khamis Primary School on Sunday when the child was severely beaten by his teacher that his left arm was fractured.
The child was reportedly taken to the Accident and Emergency Department at Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC), where his arm was put in a cast and he was kept under observation before being discharged the same day.
The child’s father, still in shock, said yesterday that he feared for the safety of his son.
“I was told he played a prank on his classmates and was punished for that. But this is not the way to punish,” he told the GDN.
He said initially he thought it was a minor sprain.
“But when it swelled up later in the afternoon, a few hours after he came from school, I brought him here,” he added.
The father said he also reported the matter at Khamis police station.
A doctor who treated the child at the SMC said he had a hairline fracture in the lower part of his arm.
“We treated him, put his arm in a cast and gave him an appointment to come to an orthopaedic specialist a week later,” said the doctor.
“But the father and son came back again because the child was suffering from severe pain.”
The doctor said it would take approximately three weeks for the fracture to heal.
An Education Ministry spokesman said he was shocked at the incident. “I have no idea what has happened but I will investigate the matter and get back as soon as possible,” he said
