The family members of Juma Al Dossary are demanding the closure of Camp Delta. The call comes as the international day to demand the shutting down of Guantanamo Bay will be held on January 11. It would be the fifth anniversary of the first prisoners to be brought to the Camp.
“I want the camp to be shut down and the detainees to be released and united with their families,” said Juma’s brother Khalid Al Dossary from Saudi Arabia. “I am in touch with our lawyer Joshua who keeps updating me about my brother.”

The now dissolved Bahrain Centre for Human Rights (BCHR) plans to organise a campaign on the day. “We have not decided yet but will plan something on January 11. Guantanamo Bay is an example of human rights violations to the world where detainees are tortured and ill-treated. We will continue to fight for this cause and request the authorities from both Bahrain and the US to resolve the issue,” said Nabeel Rajab from BCHR.
The lawyer, Joshua Colangelo Bryan, whose firm is handling the case of the two Bahraini detainees (Juma Al Dossary and Isa Al Murbati) sent a letter to the BCHR recently stating the condition of Juma. “He is kept in isolation and is being held at the mental unit of the hospital for a year now. Most of the detainees in this unit suffer from severe psychological problems and cannot communicate properly.”
Joshua further said in his letter: “For recreation breaks, Juma is sent along with a Yemeni detainee. He has asked the authorities to shift him with another detainee for the break but the psychiatrist said that the only other detainee he could go with was one who had been on hunger strike and cannot walk.”
Juma has asked Joshua to bring along the photographs of his niece and nephew in his next visit in January. Earlier, Umm Ali, the wife of Isa Al Murbati, told the Tribune that she wished that her husband could come home and celebrate Eid with the family.
According to the Amnesty International, there are about 775 detainees who have been held at Guantanamo Bay since January 11, 2002. Some of the prisoners were released by the US authorities and there are about 430 detainees of over 35 nationalities. It also states that none of the detainee has been convicted of a criminal offence by the US.
