A FORUM promoting the importance of women’s involvement in politics is being held today. More than 80 people, including female candidates, are expected to attend the meeting held under the theme Vote for Her.
Staged by the Future Kids Youth Society, it will feature a discussion about what value women can bring to the political process by being elected.
Participants will have the chance to question candidates on any issue they wish.
Four experts have been lined up to give presentations about the achievements of women in key fields of politics, economics, the media and academia.
They include Shura Council member Dr Fakhria Dairi, economics professor Dr Hussain Al Madhi, academia expert Dr Ahmed Al Atwi and Akhbar Al Khaleej journalist Amal Al Khayat.
The event is open to the public at the Mother and Child Welfare Society, Isa Town, from 6pm.
The society holds regular events to support young people and children in Bahrain, said chairman Subah Al Zayani.
He said the organisation was trying to help as many women as possible, whatever their political beliefs, to make it into parliament in the forthcoming elections.
The society has already produced 2,000 badges featuring the logo Vote for Her to be handed out at the event.
“By hosting such events, we can tell young people what Bahraini women have achieved in the past in different areas,” Mr Al Zayani told the GDN.
“We are trying to tell them it is very important to have them in parliament.
“We have invited all the women who are standing for election and young people from various societies and schools as well as women’s societies.
“Ten candidates have agreed to come and we are hoping more will attend.
“Our aim is to support women because they are a very important part of our society and if they have a chance to be elected to parliament they can do something for the family and young people.
“They will probably care more about these issues than men.”
