Bahraini Guantanamo Bay detainee Salah Al Blooshi finally returned home yesterday after being held for more than five years in extrajudicial detention in the United States’ Guantanamo Bay detainment camps in Cuba.
Immediately on arrival, Blooshi was taken to the Public Prosecutor where after a short debriefing he was taken home by his family. There was no case against Blooshi and the questions asked by the Public Prosecutor were just routine procedure.
Speaking to the Press outside the Public Prosecutor’s, Salah’s father, Abdulrasool Al Blooshi, thanked God for the return of his son. He thanked King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the government, the lawyers and human rights activist Nabeel Rajab for their efforts in securing the release of his son.

Abdulrasool Al Blooshi voiced hope that all the others incarcerated in Guantanamo Bay will also be released. He thanked the Press for standing by Salah and highlighting “my son’s suffering during the more than five-year detention.” He said that there were no charges against Salah.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement said it was coordinating with the American government to secure the release of all the remaining Bahrainis detained in Guantanamo Bay. The ministry was also making all efforts to persuade the American government to close the detention centre in Cuba.
The US Embassy in Bahrain was actively involved in giving details of the files on the rest of the detainees to the Bahraini government in order to facilitate their release at the earliest possible time.
The statement also said that the government had worked out a rehabilitation programme for Salah and the rest of the detainees so that they can live a normal and healthy life as members of the Bahraini society.
