Sommaire: 29 June, Brussels – The Spokesperson of Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission, issued the following statement today:
“Following the Declaration of the European Council on 24 June, the Bahraini authorities are fully aware of the concerns of the European Union regarding recent trials and sentencing of opposition and civil society representatives.
As the appeal hearings begin, the High Representative calls for them to be carried out in full transparency and respect of Bahrain’s own laws, as well as the international norms Bahrain has signed up to. She also believes it is essential that Bahrain ensures adequate detention conditions and medical care. All detainees, including European nationals, should also be permitted consular access where relevant and be allowed to receive family visits.”
