ANHRI has condemned today the sudden trial of two parliamentarians and a lawyer in the National Safety Court (Emergency) after they had been detained for 40 days in an unknown place for their criticism of the suppressive measures taken by the Bahraini authorities against the peaceful demonstrations.

The two members of Bahraini parliament Jawad Fayrouz and Matar Matar, and the activist lawyer Mohamed El Tajir had been detained and taken to an unknown place since last April before the Bahraini authorities put them suddenly on trial without notifying their relatives or lawyers. The detainees were accused of provoking public to change ruling regime, spreading malicious rumors, and inciting people to attack security forces. The court decided to postpone hearing in the case to next week.
The National Safety Court (Emergency), presided by a military judge and two civilian judges, have issued several prison sentences with periods ranging between few months and seven years. The court also sentenced yesterday the young poet Ayat Al Qurmuzi, 20 years old, for one year in prison after she had participated in demonstrations and recited poems inciting hatred against the ruling regime.
ANHRI said “The Bahraini authorities are still trying activists in military prosecutions, arresting them from home using police in plain clothes, and detaining them for long periods without trials before they put them on sudden, swift and unfair trials in exceptional courts. This scenario proves that the Bahraini authorities are still using the same suppressive measures against freedom and human rights ignoring to make any true reforms in Bahrain after the demonstrations had stopped.”
ANHRI added “Human rights situation in Bahrain is continuously deteriorating since the outbreak of the demonstrations in last February. The violation of human rights becomes a daily behavior of Bahraini security forces that don’t consider the international conventions and treaties. Civil society organizations are urged to press the Bahraini authorities over freedom of opinion and expression and right of peaceful protest.”
