MANAMA: A worker, who was kept in chains and locked up by his sponsor in a room at A’Ali for nearly 24 hours, was rescued last night by Indian embassy officials following a tip-off.
The sponsor was planning to deport him today.
Indian Dharmarasan Sengottai, 24, from Tamil Nadu state came to Bahrain two years ago after paying BD1,250 for a tailor’s visa.
His CPR shows his sponsor as Fadhel Abbas Ebrahim Alaaraj Tailoring Establishment.
Shop owner Fadhel Abbas told the GDN that Mr Sengottai ran away in 2004, a couple of months after arriving in Bahrain. And as his visa had expired on September 21 this year Mr Abbas wanted to send him back to India.

“I kept him chained because I feared he might escape through the air-conditioner hole in the room,” said Mr Abbas.
“I was also hoping that if I kept him for a while, another Indian man who had run away with him would try to contact him and I could catch both of them and send them back.”
Following an anonymous tip-off at around 6.30pm yesterday, an embassy official along with Co-ordination Committee of Indian Associations general secretary John Iype rushed to the building in A’Ali where Mr Sengottai was reportedly kept locked up.
“We called the Isa Town Police Station who arrived soon and made the sponsor open the door,” said Mr Ipe.
A complaint was filed last night but the charges are yet to be framed by the Public Prosecution.
Mr Sengottai was also taken to Salmaniya Medical Complex for treatment.
