They said Mr Palanichami, from Maavatam district of Tamil Nadu, came to Bahrain four months ago and had been working as a painter and carpenter at the Aman Carpentry Workshop, Sanad. He worked from 6am to 6pm.

Mr Palanichami was working alone at the ma’atam, doing small painting jobs, after his usual 9am break, said sources.

They said his colleagues, who took their breaks later, alerted the foreman after finding him hanging from a beam, with his legs bound.

The body was taken to the Salmaniya Medical Complex mortuary.

Indian Ambassador Balkrishna Shetty said last night that he was aware of the death, but could not comment further until a post-mortem had been carried out.
