Bahrain Center for Human Rights received new information that a group of detainees in the Central Prison of “Jaw” – convicted in security and political issues – are being subjected once again to assaults at the hands of the Special Forces in an attempt to break the hunger strike which the detainees had initiated in protest against the abuse they faced inside the abovementioned prison and the cruel prison circumstances.
Bahrain Center for Human Rights received news that a group of prisoners faced assaults that led to injuries among them; how serious these injuries are is unknown. Among the injured is the social activist Hasan Salman Abu-Ali who seems to have faced several injuries due to these assaults. “Hasan Salman Abu-Ali” was sentenced to three years in prison on the background of charging him with the dissemination and leaking information related to the workers in the National Security Apparatus, which is the same apparatus that is behind many of the violations that have been monitored over the last years. The BCHR benefited from the disclosed information at that time in preparing a number of detailed reports about the role of this institute in the escalating violations in the last period. [1] The BCHR fears that this targeting is out of revenge for what he has been charged of, and by orders of the officials in the National Security Apparatus. Among those known to have been injured is Kumail Al-Manami – Ma’ameer, Mohammed Hasan Isa – Ma’ameer – and Kumail Ahmed Ali – Karzakan. Information received by the BCHR indicates that the majority of assaults take place after the end of the official working hours and after the Bahraini officials and officers have left, and at the entry of the night shift whose majority is made up of recently naturalized foreign forces. These forces and assaults are led by Ahmed Hussein Fareeh, Ibrahim Al-Najran and Mohammed Farhan.
These assaults occured after the prison administration failed to break the protest strike in which the majority of jail residents took part in, and also due to its failure in improving the living conditions of the prisoners. The BCHR had released a report[2] a week ago warning of the possibility of the deterioration of the situation; however the prison administration continued its assaults and abuse of prisoners at a time where it is taking some superficial moves to absorb the anger of the families of prisoners, such as meeting their representatives.
Based on the above, the BCHR demands the following:
§ Stop using violence especially against the prisoners and calling to account the officials who issued orders to assault them;
§ open the prison for visits and calls, and not invalidate any of them for any reason, whatever the justifications are;
§ treat the prisoners that were injured in the assaults in specialized hospitals;
§ permit the independent human rights organizations, on top of them the “International Committee of the Red Cross” to visit the prison and look into the condition of the inmates;
§ keep the naturalized foreign forces away from dealing with the prisoners who are citizens, as their presence contributes in the crisis and tension.
