MANAMA: A verdict will be issued on October 19 in the case of Akhbar Al Khaleej editor-in-chief Anwar Abdulrahman, who has been accused of insulting human rights activist Nabeel Rajab. He is standing trial at the High Criminal Court after Mr Rajab was allegedly accused in newspaper articles of collaborating with Iranian authorities.
Mr Rajab had denied the accusations, which his lawyers described as harmful and false as well as tainted the activist’s reputation and insulted his pride. Judges yesterday adjourned the case to October 19 to deliver a verdict. Defence lawyer Sami Seyadi said it is not permissible to change the delineation of the charge against Mr Abdulrahman.
He was referring to a previous court ruling of striking out “his status as Akhbar Al Khaleej editor-in-chief”, despite the fact that the charge has been filed against him according to his profession.
Article 258 of criminal procedures law provides that it is not permissible to punish the defendant for any other incident other than the one described in the committal order or the court summons notice paper.
