RELATIVES of the terror suspects clashed with riot police yesterday after they were banned from entering the courtroom.

The chaos erupted as the defendants’ relatives protested outside the Justice and Islamic Affairs Ministry complex.

They were told to stand in front of a coffee shop in the Diplomatic Area, but were later told to move because they were creating chaos.

Traffic was halted as female relatives refused to leave the area and sat on the side of the road.

Riot police then surrounded the women and repeatedly hit their batons on their shields, in an attempt to drive them off.

Forty-five minutes of screaming and scuffling ensued, until the women were chased away.

A GDN photographer was detained by riot police who formed a human chain to block the road to the court complex.

He was ordered not to move or to take any photographs, but took pictures after the police broke lines to chase protesters.

Representatives from major societies who are following the case were also in court. A French Embassy representative told the GDN that they were present because they have been following the case since the beginning and were keen to know the outcome.

Other representatives included members of the Bahrain Human Rights Watch Society and several MPs, who attended the session and unsuccessfully tried to calm relatives outside the complex.
