SEVEN political activists have gone on hunger strike to demand the release of suspects arrested for allegedly planning to carry out a terrorist attack during Bahrain’s National Day.
The news came as it emerged that a major demonstration involving four political societies was cancelled yesterday after organisers were denied permission to hold it.
The men on strike include former president of the dissolved Bahrain Centre for Human Rights (BCHR) Abdulhadi Al Khawaja and Haq Movement for Liberties and Democracy media and international relations director Dr Abduljalil Al Singace.
The Haq official was arrested during an overnight raid on his home last month along with Haq chief Hassan Mushaima and religious scholar Mohammed Al Muqdad.
Dr Al Singace was released the following day, but his co-accused remained in custody.
The other activists on hunger strike are Abdulwahad Hussain, Shaikh Abdulhadi Al Muqtadar, Saeed Al Noori, Fadel Sitri and Shaikh Abduljalil Muqdad.
Hundreds of people were expected to attend yesterday’s rally near the Dana Mall, held by the Al Wefaq National Islamic Society, National Democratic Action Society (NDAS), Islamic Action Society and National Brotherhood Society. The December 17 plot allegedly included ambushing policemen, destroying public property and attacking shopping malls, markets and hotels with homemade explosives.
