MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) – Police fired tear gas at dozens of rioters in various parts of Bahrain on Tuesday as the county’s public prosecutor charged three prominent Shiite activists with promoting regime change.
Rioters hurled stones and burned tires and trash cans, causing traffic jams in several areas outside the capital, Manama, witnesses said. Several
rioters were injured, witnesses said, but police would not give a specific number or provide further details.
The riots first erupted Monday in response to the arrest of the three activists. They continued Tuesday after the prosecutor’s office announced that the three had been charged with promoting regime change «through terrorism,» according to a statement by the office.
One of the activists was released but banned from traveling, and the two others remained in custody, the statement said.
The activists were arrested Monday after allegedly refusing to answer summons for questioning linked to the December arrests of 14 Bahrainis for allegedly plotting attacks in Manama.
The tiny oil-refining and banking island in the Persian Gulf is a close U.S. ally and hosts the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet.
In December, the country’s Shiites staged widespread protests, fueled in part by economic disparities between the predominantly Sunni ruling elite and the country’s poorer, Shiite majority.
