Manama, Bahrain – At least six people, mainly women, were injured on Monday after police clashed with protesters near a Bahraini courthouse shortly after the court adjourned a controversial case over the killing of a policeman. The clashes erupted as family members of 19 defendants surrounded police buses getting ready to transport the defendant back to their detention centres.

Police had earlier barred the families and independent observers from attending the court proceedings and restricted visits with the detainees, whom their families allege have been tortured.

The case concerns the killing of a policeman in April 2008 in a village north of the capital Manama, amid conflicting accounts by police witnesses about how the man was killed. Some accounts spoke of a molotov cocktail attack on an unmarked police car, while others said the policeman had been struck by a stone in a clash.

The Chief Medical Examiner’s testimony Monday undercut the prosecution case when he said the death might have been caused by the policeman falling and hitting his head on the ground.

Bahrain has witnessed sporadic unrest since December of 2007 with police so far detaining at least 60 people, all Shiites, on various charges.

Last month, Manama officials said they had foiled a terror plot in which homemade explosives would have been used to disrupt the National Day and Accession Day celebrations held on December 16.

The alleged terror suspects had received their training in Syria and were being lead by two Bahraini opposition leaders living in London, according to Bahraini officials.
