MANAMA: Fourteen men arrested for plotting terror attacks during National and Accession Day celebrations confessed on a special programme on Bahrain TV last night. The suspects confessed and described details of their plans and previous involvement in illegal acts.
According to their confessions, they were previously arrested for charges including unrest, sabotage, arson and drug cases.
They were directed by two Bahrainis living in London and others in Bahrain. They were instigated to assault naturalised Bahrainis and torture them to spread hatred and chaos in society.
The plot also involved ambushing policemen, destroying public property, attacking commercial malls, markets and hotels, defaming parliament and Shura Council and intensifying sit-ins in the vicinity of the Royal Court. They admitted receiving training in Syria on how to make and use explosives and other weapons. They said they were fuelled by the sermons they attended in local ma’atams and mosques. They also stated that their confessions were made before the General Prosecutor and were broadcast under no external pressure or threats. l The General Prosecution has allowed the publishing and broadcasting of names and photographs of the suspects to enlighten the society of the truth, without adversely affecting the course of investigations. The permission also came at a request from security officials to reassure citizens that the situation is totally under control and the suspects and their criminal acts have been completely foiled, sources said last night.
