MANAMA: Bahrain’s Interior Minister said 14 people have been arrested for plotting attacks during National Day holidays.

Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa said those arrested received training in Syria on using weapons and making explosives.

Yesterday’s statement said the attack was set for December 17 and planned targets included Exhibition Road (Avenue), the Marina Club, the Diplomatic Area and nightclubs in Manama. The group planned to disrupt peace and public order, scare citizens and residents and endanger their lives.

He added that two Bahrainis living in London are believed to be the cell’s leaders. They guided and led the plot.

The minister said that suspects travelled to Syria as tourists in July and August and then met one of the two “masterminds”.

“There they received intensive training on making explosives, bombs, how to use them and how to make car bombs,” the minister said.

The masterminds planned to smuggle a large quantity of weapons into Bahrain to be used for acts of violence and sabotage.

Police stormed houses of the 14 suspects, confiscated explosives, according to the minister who also said that all of them have confessed and have given detailed account of their plans. Two of the 14 were arrested early on December 18 and face the same charges.
