TWO men have been accused of threatening national security after being arrested for an alleged plot to carry out a terrorist attack during Bahrain’s National Day celebrations.

The suspects, both in their 20s, came from the villages of Sanabis and Daih, according to lawyer Moha-mmed Al Jishi.

“The General Prosecution questioned my clients and accused them of tampering with national security,” he said.

According to a report in Akhbar Al Khaleej, the suspects confessed to possessing explosives and planning to detonate them.

Mr Al Jishi said the men would remain in custody for two weeks.

Parliament’s Future Bloc chairman Hassan Al Dossary yesterday strongly condemned the attempted attack and called for those responsible to be given the toughest penalties using the anti-terrorism law.

“Individuals that carry out such horrible acts are not considered to be part of Bahrain or worthy of its citizenship,” he said.

A number of suspects were arrested on Tuesday after an attack aimed at disrupting the National Day and Accession Day celebrations was foiled.

National security sources said those detained had planned to detonate homemade explosives containing iron pellets to cause the maximum damage to people and property.
