TWO Bahraini men have been charged with supporting, funding and co-operating with a foreign terrorist group, it emerged yesterday.
One of them had allegedly collected money from people in Bahrain and delivered it to the group, said a Public Prosecution spokesman, who was announcing the findings by the Criminal Investigation Directorate.
He said the investigation revealed the suspect had “ideas to harm the country’s security with outside help” with the participation of another suspect.
The first admitted he had previously presented money to the group but the second suspect denied the charges and was released midnight Friday. The prosecutor said the two men had been charged with supporting and co-operating with a foreign terrorist group and funding its activities. The first has been detained for 15 days and the second has been released on condition he remains at his home address. Sources told the GDN that the first suspect, in his mid to late 20s, was allegedly arrested at Bahrain International Airport on his way to Bombay, India.
The spokesman said the second suspect, a family man, in his 40s, was a member of the Adala (Justice) Society.
The arrests followed the imprisonment of three other Bahraini men who were found guilty of terrorism activities earlier this year.
They were jailed for six months each for supporting the Taliban in Afghanistan. Two others a Bahraini and a Qatari, who were jailed in their absence, are yet to be arrested. becky@gdn.com.bh
