UN council endorses Kingdom’s report
A National Human Rights Commission will be set up in Bahrain next month, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Nizar bin Sadiq Al Baharna, said in Geneva yesterday.
The minister made the announcement at the end of the 14th plenary session following the endorsement of the Kingdom’s UPR Report by the United Nations Human Rights Council.
“The commission will be set up within a month, based on the Paris principles. It would have experts from civil societies,” the minister said.

In his address to the meeting, Dr Al Baharna said, “We are not a perfect country. We offered a chance to all stakeholders to participate in drafting the action plan. All their recommendations were approved in this plan.”
Earlier, Dr. Wajeeha Al Baharna from the Bahrain Women Association asked the government to amend the nationality law (which does not grant citizenship to foreigners married to Bahraini women and their children, drop the reservations on the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women( CEDAW) and enact a Family Law.
Activist Abdul Hadi Al Khawaja who represented- Frontline and Cairo Institute for Human Rights expressed apprehension on the attacks on human rights defenders in the country and alleged that some activists were physically and mentallay tortured.
