INTERIOR Ministry officials have denied claims that police arrested seven men simply because they were human rights activists.
The claims were made by the now-dissolved Bahrain Centre for Human Rights (BCHR), which alleged that members of various unofficial committees connected to it were being rounded up.
It said three members of the Unemployment Committee, two from the Committee for Detainees and one each from the Committee against High Prices and the Committee Against One Per Cent (unemployment deductions) have reportedly been detained.
Activists say three of the men were arrested in their homes, one at his workplace and three others turned themselves in at Hamad Town Police Station between March 31 and April 11
However, an Interior Ministry official strongly denied any human rights activists had been detained – saying the men were suspected saboteurs.
“We do not have any activists,” the official told the GDN. “All those arrested are suspects of sabotage and will face criminal charges.”
