AN Indonesian housemaid is recovering at the Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) after she was allegedly slapped, kicked, and stamped on by her Bahraini sponsor and his Filipino wife until she fell unconscious.

Yati Jari, aged 24, was reportedly attacked by the couple.

“The couple panicked (when she fell unconscious) and brought her to the SMC,” said Indonesian Consul labour officer Agus Mahiudim.

A doctor at the SMC treating Ms Jari, who did not want to be named, said she was being kept in seclusion at the hospital while the Public Prosecution investigates her case.

“She is, however, still unfit to travel and will have to be looked after for a few more weeks before she can undertake any journey,” he said.

Mr Mahiudim said the consul received a call from the SMC on July 11, saying they had an Indonesian maid at the hospital.

“When we went to check, we found Ms Jari was unable to walk or to make a statement,” he said.

She later broke down after repeated coaxing by the police and consul officials and said the sponsor’s wife beat her every day, said Mr Mahiudim.

He revealed Ms Jari had been kicked in the stomach and the head, as well as made to lie face down on the road leading up to their villa’s front door, in Hoora.

“The maid said her sponsor’s wife then stamped on her hands leading to her hands being bruised and burnt,” he added.

Mr Mahiudim said she was sent to the Psychiatric Hospital for a check-up on July 14, where she was ruled out as suffering from any other problem and was taken back to the SMC a day

later.

Mr Mahiudim said she suffered injuries on her legs, stomach, behind the ears and on her back.

“She also claimed one of her nails had been pulled out,” he said.

The consul said the Public Prosecution has extensively interviewed the maid and the outcome is expected to be known in the coming days.
