MANAMA: Scores of masked youngsters yesterday fought pitched battles with riot police in Jidhafs after setting fire to used furniture and garbage bins on the Budaiya Highway.
The trouble began at around 5pm when some youngsters emerged from the bylanes of Jidhafs and set fire to furniture in the middle of the highway. They then set fire to garbage bins as riot police arrived on the scene and chased them away. They re-emerged a few minutes later, pelting the police with stones. Molotov cocktails were also thrown at the police.
The police retaliated by firing tear gas shells. Many of the rioters slipped into the lanes while throwing stones.
Hundreds of shoppers at the busy vegetable and fruit market next to the Jidhafs Grand Mosque fled as they were affected by tear gas and shopkeepers downed shutters.
Some youngsters reportedly entered a residential compound in Tashan and threw stones. They were chased away by some elders in the area.
One of the shopkeepers in the market said he was not sure why this was happening. “Their only aim seems to be to attract attention,” he said. “I am told there is a group of between 50 and 60 youngsters, drawn from various areas of Bahrain, who indulge in these acts. I have never seen anyone I recognised from this area.”
An Interior Ministry spokesman said three people were arrested
