MANAMA: Foreign labourers who unjustifiably refuse to work will be immediately deported, the Labour Ministry said yesterday. New visas to replace them will also be granted to their employers to ensure that work is not disrupted.
Bahrain has no plans to introduce a minimum wage policy for expatriate labourers, said Labour Ministry Under-Secretary Shaikh Abdulrahman bin Abdulla Al Khalifa.

MANAMA: Foreign labourers who unjustifiably refuse to work will be immediately deported, the Labour Ministry said yesterday. New visas to replace them will also be granted to their employers to ensure that work is not disrupted.
Bahrain has no plans to introduce a minimum wage policy for expatriate labourers, said Labour Ministry Under-Secretary Shaikh Abdulrahman bin Abdulla Al Khalifa.
He was speaking yesterday at the first meeting of a trouble-shooting committee set up following a spate of strikes by expatriate construction workers demanding pay rises.
Shaikh Abdulrahman blamed the strikes on Indian Ambassador Balkrishna Shetty’s Press announcement of a new BD100 minimum wage set by his government for unskilled Indian workers in Bahrain.
“Some labourers misunderstood those remarks on the new salary scheme, which will be effective from next month, when new contracts come into force,” said Shaikh Abdulrahman.
India said it would not allow its unskilled workers to leave for Bahrain unless they had contracts stipulating the minimum wage, under a new law originally scheduled to come into force on Saturday, but which is now under review.
Bahrain says India is entitled to set laws governing the migration of its workers, but the new rule is not binding on Bahrain’s employers.
