BAHRAIN: Detained Activists Still Tortured

Protests Continue and Brutally Faced

Aftermath recent interviews by families with some activists (Mohamed Al-Singace, Naji Fateel, Isa Al-Sarh, Ahmed Jaffar and Hasan Abdulnabi), they affirmed that they are neither aware of the charges against them, nor the fact that they are due to appear in court on February 3rd. They had not seen their lawyers since the Public Prosecution referral of their case to the higher criminal court.

Furthermore, the activists are still enduring torture every day. Mohamed Al-Singace is hand-cuffed and left incommunicado in dark rotten 1×2 meter room. There is no light in it, filthy and is filled with insects. Every night, members of the interrogation and torturing staff come to Mohamed tiny cell and kick him, saying “let your brother be of use to you”- referring to Dr Abduljalil Alsingace of Movement of Liberties and Democracy-HAQ. He is being exposed to the ill-treatment because of his relationship with his elder brother Abduljalil. Mohamed is then taken to the torture chamber where is allowed to observe and hear the wails of other activists hanging upside down and shackled. During the night this is his agony, enduring moans and crys of others, a mean of exposing him to psychological torture. Physically, he is suffering from backache due to earlier ill-treatment by the security bodies. Last Thursday, he was taken to Bahrain Defence Force Hospital for treatment.

Hasan Abdulnabi, held in solitary, was taken to Fort Hospital (Ministry of Interior local health center) to support his nutrition system because of the continuing hunger strike he is carrying out with some other activists in protest to the torture and ill-treatment in the Criminal Investigation Directorate (CID) in Al-Adleya. Naji Fateel is still suffering from electrocution in different parts of his bodies as well as due to Falaqah, a well known way of bearing and enduring pain in victims while being shackled with a hard bar. Ahmed Jafar and Isa Al-Sarh are still exposed to beatings and psychological torture which include holding them incommunicado, preventing and ill-treatment which include banning from meeting their relatives.

It is to be mentioned that these activists, including other ten detainees, are charged with rioting, illegal assembly, theft and illegal possession of a weapon and ammunition, as well as blazing car vehicle. Based on the Penal Code as well as the Code on Explosives, Armaments and Ammunition, the 15 detainees could face imprisonment ranging to up t0 32 years.

Mean while, protests for their release continue in Sitra, Karzakan, Bani Jamrah and Sanabis. For the last three nights, protestors hold a sit-in in Jidhafs and then make their way towards Bahrain International Exhibition Center (BIEC) in Sanabis, where the Autumn Exhibition is being held. By the time the march reaches the outskirts of Sanabis, towards BIEC, heavily armed special forces attack them by rubber bullets and chemical tear gas in order to disperse them. Every night, the clashes continue for over two hours, where blazed rubbish containers are well seen, from a distance, blocking roads in the area.
