The Government of Bahrain is still Detaining Children: 15-Year-Old (Ali Hussain Ali Nasser Matrook)

The Bahrain Centre for Human Rights (BCHR) expresses deep concern over the ongoing detention of Ali Hussain Ali Nasser Matrook, a 15-year-old student from Karana. Ali was arrested on August 26, 2024, by civilian forces accompanied by police within his village. He faces charges of setting a fire and has been held at Al-Hoora Detention Center, with his detention extended six times, most recently for two weeks on December 2, 2024.

Throughout his detention, Ali has been denied his right to legal representation. No lawyer attended during interrogations, violating both domestic and international legal standards. Additionally, Ali was subjected to physical mistreatment, having been slapped during his arrest. Despite his young age and first-time offender status, he remains detained, with his education severely disrupted. His school seat remains empty as the academic term nears its conclusion, putting his future at risk.

Nedal Al-Salman Director of BCHR, emphasized the urgent need for action, stating:
“The continued detention of children like Ali is a grave violation of their rights. Authorities must allow lawyers to attend with detained children to ensure fair legal proceedings. These minors belong in school, not in detention centers. We call on the authorities to release Ali and all detained children immediately, allowing them to return to their studies and rebuild their futures in a safe and supportive environment.”

BCHR urges the Child and Family Prosecution to take Ali’s age, educational needs, and the psychological impact of his detention into account. We stand firm in our demand for the immediate release of all detained minors, ensuring their right to legal representation, education, and protection from harm.
