A post office worker has been on hunger strike since yesterday in protest against a five-day suspension served on him by his superiors.
Jamal Ateeq Juma, who heads the Postal Workers Union (PWU), told the Tribune: “I was not given any warning by the management and was handed a five day suspension notice.
This is in violation of the Trade Unions Act. I will continue my hunger strike till my suspension period ends on Wednesday.”
Juma said he had not eaten or had any water from the morning and will stage his protest at the headquarters of the General Federation of Bahrain Trade Unions (GFBTU) in Adliya.
“The Bahrain Post is aware of my hunger strike,” Juma, who is also a GFBTU board member, said.
The PWU has about 250 members, who according to Juma, would face problems with the planned privatisation of the postal sector.
Union leaders and his own family members are supporting Juma and were present at the GFBTU headquarters in Adliya when Tribune visited them.
“We are supporting him because we feel every unionists should be respected. The management has taken a harsh stance in suspending him for five days. No unionists should be suspended or sacked by their firms,” Sayed Hussain Sayed Hashim, member of the Unionist General Assembly, said.
