Jailed activists’ families to receive BD2,000 gift

AN international human rights organisation has made a donation of almost BD2,000 to families of activists jailed in connection with demonstrations that followed the December 25 Bahrain International Airport clashes between protesters and police.

Vice-president of the Ireland-based international foundation Front Line, Andrew Anderson, visited the families during his trip to Bahrain in April. The organisation works for the protection of human rights defenders by lobbying governments and international authorities such as the United Nations (UN).

AN international human rights organisation has made a donation of almost BD2,000 to families of activists jailed in connection with demonstrations that followed the December 25 Bahrain International Airport clashes between protesters and police.

Vice-president of the Ireland-based international foundation Front Line, Andrew Anderson, visited the families during his trip to Bahrain in April. The organisation works for the protection of human rights defenders by lobbying governments and international authorities such as the United Nations (UN).

It also runs training programmes for activists, provides small grants towards safety equipment for human rights organisations and runs a biennial conference to allow rights workers to network and share experiences.

The organisation has issued a statement calling for action to be taken to protect activists in Bahrain and to release those detained, naming National Unemployment Committee members Moussa Abda’ali, Mohsin Ali Salman and Hassan Abdulnabi, Sufferers of Hereditary Diseases Committee member Qane’e Ahmed and independent activist Ahmed Al Haddad.

The statement also called for a an independent commission to be set up to investigate allegations of attacks on activists Moussa Abda’ali (in November last year), Nabeel Rajab and Abdulhadi Al Khawaja (in July last year) and the alleged targeting of Abdulraouf Al Shayeb
