New website for banned rights group

Gulf Daily News – 8 August 2006

A BANNED Bahraini human rights group has launched its English-language website as an online resource for “people interested in human rights in Bahrain”.
The now-dissolved Bahrain Centre for Human Rights (BCHR) went online at www.bahrainrights.org, with sections dedicated to human rights issues including women’s rights, migrant workers’ rights, discrimination and Guantanamo Bay. “The BCHR is still functioning after gaining a wide internal and external support for its struggle to promote human rights in Bahrain,” organisers say on the site. The group outlines its vision for “a prosperous democratic country free of discrimination and other violations of human rights” and says its mission is “to encourage and support individuals and groups to be proactive in the protection of their own and others’ rights; and to struggle to promote democracy and human rights in accordance with international norms”. The website also hosts an archive, video and photo galleries, and sections for BCHR press releases and upcoming events.

The BCHR was dissolved by the old Labour and Social Affairs Ministry on September 28, 2004 for allegedly breaching the 1989 Societies Law. It lost an appeal against the decision earlier this year.
