Bahrain Youth Society for Human Rights (BYSHR) is highly concerned with the consequences suffered by citizens Mohamed Yahia, 28, from Damstan. Yahia, the unemployed torture survivor, is suffering because of the torture and harsh treatment he received while in prison during the period from 1994 – 1999.

Yahia told BYSHR that he “was arrested for the first time by security forces in 1997 in a rally launched by students from his school calling for implementing constitutional reforms. Then, I was detained for 6 months and suffered harsh treatment and torture. Therefore, I launched a hunger strike to be released.”

BYSHR representatives visited torture survivor in his house in Damstan area. They found that the four brothers of Yahia were detained separately before. BYSHR confirms that the survivor is in bad health condition.

“Six months later, the Security Forces released me. However, they arrested me once again in 1998 during my participation in doing group religious rituals. I was, then, transformed to Intelligence Bureau where I was tortured more than ever. The name of the person who supervised my torture is Khaled El-Wazan. In 2000, I was released among those who were released in the so-called “Political Reform in Bahrain.” In the same year, I visited the doctor because of hard pains in my chest and difficulty with breathing. The doctor told me that my lungs were hurt because of being beaten severely.”

Yahia clarified that he suffers pains in his chest and lungs as a result of the beating her received in prison. He conducted three surgical operations in 2000, 2003, and 2007. Yahia is breathing through medical devices.

Bahrain Youth Society for Human Rights calls upon Ministry of Health, Ministry of Justice, and Ministry of Interior to:

The Ministry of Health should ensure the safety and good health of the torture survivor, Mohamed Yahia and do all necessary measures to cure him even if abroad with paying all expenses.
The Ministry of Justice should reopen investigations in the incident of torturing citizen, Mohamed Yahia and many other victims from the previous era.
The Ministry of Interior should remove the liable officer from his position and putting him to trial because of torturing Yahia and causing all these deteriorations in his health.

Bahrain Youth Society for Human Rights burdens the Bahraini government with the liability of rehabilitating torture survivor, Mohamed Yahia. Security Forces tortured Yahia during the implementation of State Security law. Therefore, BYSHR calls upon the House of Representatives to cure the influences of the previous era that witnessed severe violations against human rights. That is in addition to eliminate 56 Decree that exempts security officers from legal interrogation. Most of them practiced torture
