The Bahrain Centre for Human Rights welcomes the return of Guantanamo detainee Juma Al Dossari, 5 years after his incarceration without
trial or charges at the US military facility. The BCHR calls on all the international organisation and the Bahraini authorities to urgently continue with diplomatic efforts to bring back the last Bahraini detainee at Guantanamo Bay, Isa Al Murbati.
“We are delighted to see the fruition of joint efforts from activists, American lawyers representing the Bahraini detainees at Guantanamo
Bay, and the Bahraini government,” BCHR vice president Nabeel Rajab said. “But we must not forget that the Al Dossary’s family’s happiness
undoubtedly comes at the same time as sadness for the Al Murbati family, who are still waiting to have their loved one returned to them.
“We urge that – as indicated by diplomatic sources late last year -the final Bahraini detainee at Guantanamo Bay is returned home,” he added.
“Let us close this chapter of gross and systematic violations of human rights.” The Bahrain authorities must ensure that Juma’s rights are respected
following his release, and that genuine steps are taken to ensure his reintegration into life outside Guantanamo.
