On 22 January 2021, MEP Karen Melchior wrote a letter in which sixteen MEPs expressed their deep concern about the worsening situation of human rights in Bahrain. The letter was sent to the European Union Minister for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell arguing him to hold his Bahraini counterparts accountable for their human rights commitments. The letter stressed the cases of high-profile activists and human rights defenders, such as Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja, Mohammed Habib AlMuqdad, Hassan Mushaima, and others.
On 1 February 2021, a new answer from EU High Representative on Bahrain came with a specific mention of prominent political leader Mr. Hassan Mushaima and leading human rights defenders Dr. Abduljalil Alsingace.
