On the occasion of the birthday of detained human rights defender Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja — widely known as “Bahrain’s Mandela” the Bahrain Center for Human Rights (BCHR) reaffirms its unwavering solidarity with one of Bahrain’s most prominent voices for justice, dignity, and freedom.
On his birthday, we send this message:
“We know this past year has brought you many physical and mental hardships, from illness and constant deteriorating prison conditions to the impact of regional conflict — all of which continue to affect your life inside prison. Despite all these hardships, you continue your unwavering fight for the dignity of your people and for struggles against inequality around the world. We are proud of you, and we will never stop fighting for your freedom, too.”
As the region faces escalating conflict and instability, BCHR stresses that the protection of human rights must not be sidelined. In this context, the release of Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja is not only a moral obligation but an urgent priority. Continued detention amid worsening regional conditions places his life at even greater risk.
Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja is a Danish-Bahraini dual citizen, and his case carries international legal and diplomatic responsibility. His continued arbitrary detention raises serious concerns under international law and requires renewed and immediate international action.
BCHR has consistently documented the violations he faces, including medical neglect and inhumane prison conditions, as detailed in our previous statement:

His case remains emblematic of the broader repression against human rights defenders in Bahrain.
BCHR Director Nedal Al-Salman previously stated:
“The continued detention of Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja is a stain on Bahrain’s human rights record. His resilience in the face of injustice reminds us that the struggle for freedom cannot be silenced.”

As Abdulhadi marks another birthday behind bars, BCHR renews its call for his immediate and unconditional release, especially given the current war situation and the heightened risks it poses.
His voice remains powerful. His cause remains just. And his freedom remains long overdue.
