On the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, the Bahrain Center for Human Rights (BCHR) expresses deep concern over the growing climate of intolerance and discrimination against Muslims globally and calls for renewed commitment to equality, dignity, and respect for religious diversity.
Islamophobia continues to manifest worldwide through attacks on mosques, restrictions on religious practices, discriminatory policies, and the spread of hate speech that fuels fear and division. These acts violate fundamental human rights, including the right to freedom of religion or belief and equality before the law.
In Bahrain, where society includes different Islamic sects, the spread of sectarian rhetoric risks deepening divisions within the community. Narratives that frame society as opposing groups or encourage hostility between sectors of society weaken social cohesion and threaten the stability and unity of the country.
Respect for religious diversity and equality among all citizens must remain central to building a just and inclusive society. Ending discrimination and ensuring equal rights for all communities is essential for sustainable peace and national unity.
Nedal Al-Salman, Director of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights
, stated:
“Islamophobia and sectarian discrimination are dangerous forces that divide societies and weaken the values of justice and dignity. In Bahrain, discrimination and narratives that portray communities as opposing sectors must end. Our society’s true strength lies in solidarity and mutual respect. Unity is strength, and only through unity can Bahrain build a future based on equality, justice, and respect for all.”
She added
“Bahrain’s strength lies in its diversity. Turning communities against one another only serves those who seek to silence calls for rights and justice. True stability can only be built on equality, mutual respect, and the protection of religious freedom for everyone.”
Our society’s diversity should be a source of strength, not division. Unity is strength, and only through unity, equality, and respect for all can Bahrain build a future based on justice, stability, and shared dignity.”
A society built on equality and justice must ensure that no individual or community is treated as less deserving of rights because of their religious beliefs or sectarian affiliation. Ending discrimination in Bahrain and ensuring equal treatment for all citizens is not only a human rights obligation but also a necessary step toward strengthening social stability and unity.
Promoting narratives that frame society as consisting of two opposing sectors is deeply harmful. Such rhetoric risks encouraging communities to view each other with suspicion or hostility, diverting attention from the shared values and aspirations that unite them. True national strength comes not from division, but from solidarity and mutual respect among all members of society.
Governments, media institutions, and community leaders have a responsibility to reject hate speech and sectarian incitement. Policies and public discourse must promote inclusion, equality, and dialogue rather than division. Education, awareness, and respect for diversity are essential tools in preventing discrimination and fostering a culture of coexistence.
Civil society also plays a critical role in defending the rights of all communities and in promoting a vision of society grounded in human rights, justice, and dignity for everyone.
BCHR calls on authorities, media institutions, and community leaders to actively combat hate speech, reject sectarian incitement, and work toward policies that guarantee equality and non-discrimination for all citizens.
On this day, BCHR reiterates that combating Islamophobia must also include addressing religious discrimination within societies and ensuring that diversity becomes a source of strength rather than division.
Ending discrimination in Bahrain and strengthening unity among all communities is essential for protecting human rights and building a peaceful and inclusive future.
Unity, equality, and justice must prevail over hatred and division.
